Police Seek Motive Behind Backstage Violence At Boston Rap Show

Boston police said that they are questioning fifty musicians and guests in connection with last night's brawl at a Ruff Ryders/Cash Money concert at the FleetCenter, which police now say left six people with stab wounds.

''Eve ryone in the backstage area will be treated as suspects until we can find a motive,'' said police spokesperson Margot Hill at a press conference today (4/4). The police plan to question all performers on the tour as well as their guests. Hill stated that the investigation has been slow-going due to a lack of cooperation from those involved.

Police are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the brawl, which broke out in a backstage area at 9:50 p.m. and led to the concert being shortened. Police have recovered two knives from the crime scene, but no one has been charged with the stabbings. A motive has not has been determined.

Only those with proper credentials were allowed to gather in the backstage area, and they had to pass through metal detectors. No metal detectors were used at main entrances to the arena. At the FleetCenter's first Ruff Ryders/Cash Money show on Sunday night (4/2), two men were turned away from the backstage area by venue employees after the men tried to gain access without proper credentials.

Richard Kreswick, president and CEO of the FleetCenter, said that security was higher at the two shows than at most events, but he did not comment as to whether this was a result of the genre of concert being held. The backstage melee is the first violent incident reported on the tour.

When asked whether he was aware that Ruff Ryder label headliner DMX had numerous death threats against him, Kreswick said he was unaware of any.

Police now say that six people were sent to the hospital with stab wounds. One is in critical condition in an area hospital; another is in stable condition. Four other victims were treated and released. Neither concert-goers nor police were injured in the brawl.

Because DMX and Ruff Ryder artist Eve did not perform, the FleetCenter is offering a full refund to fans. Fans can obtain refunds at the point of purchase; those who bought tickets through phone centers and over the Internet can have the ticket price credited back to their credit cards, according to venue spokesman Jim Delaney.

Tonight's (4/4) show in Philadelphia has been postponed. The April 7 show in Miami is still on schedule.
