Katrina benefit to feature Green Day, Dave Matthews, more

Sister cable-TV networks MTV, VH1 and CMT plan to simulcast a live, multi-genre concert special Sept. 10 to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Performers so far scheduled to appear include Green Day , Ludacris , Gretchen Wilson , Usher , Alicia Keys, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews Band , Rob Thomas, David Banner and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington.

According to a press release, the special will seek to raise funds for The American Red Cross and similar organizations, and will promote volunteerism.

"In the face of a tragedy of this scope, we simply have to do everything in our power to offer support, comfort and hope to all the people directly impacted by the hurricane," MTV Networks exec Judy McGrath said in a statement. "Our goal is to join forces on every medium to get involved, to volunteer, to contribute in any way we can."

According to a press release, MTV Networks' "ongoing relief campaign" will open with live performances from locations in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Nashville. In addition to Viacom's flagship music networks, the program will also air on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and broadband video networks MTV Overdrive and VSpot.

MTV News is producing a special on the hurricane relief efforts, which will also air on Sept. 10.
