Aimee Mann strings together fall shows

Singer/songwriter Aimee Mann will continue to back her latest album, "The Forgotten Arm," during a series of fall club and theater dates.

Mann's U.S. plans so far include one early September and one late-September show, followed by a number of October stops. Details are shown below. More dates are expected.

Mann is also scheduled to play three concerts in Japan. More information is posted at her website.

Released on May 3, "The Forgotten Arm" is Mann's follow-up to 2002's "Lost in Space." She recorded the set in just five days last summer with producer/singer/songwriter Joe Henry.

Backing Mann in the studio were guitarists Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow) and Julian Coryell, keyboardist Jebin Bruni, bassist Paul Bryan, and drummers Victor Indrizzo and Jay Bellarose.

"The Forgotten Arm" is a concept album that tells the story of "John and Caroline as they meet, fall in love and road trip across America," according to a press release.

"The guy's a Vietnam vet and a boxer, but he's also a drug addict, and she's trying to get away from the dead-end world where she lives in the South," Mann said in the release. "They run off together and wind up in a casino town, like Reno or Vegas, and their relationship falls apart."

Mann explained that she got the idea for the new album's title after taking up boxing.

"My friend who boxes has this move he was showing me and his name for it is 'The Forgotten Arm,'" she said. "It's like when you have someone on the ropes and you're hitting with your left hand and you have you're other hand between the two of you and your opponent forgets about the right arm, so you can bring it in for an uppercut. To me it's about the fact that the knock out punch is always the one you never see coming."
