Journey signs with Sanctuary for new album
The label plans to release the new set Oct. 4, and will offer up the first single, titled "A Place in Your Heart," to radio stations Sept. 12.
Produced by Kevin Elson--who also produced Journey's multi-platinum "Escape," "Departure" and "Frontiers" albums, as well the double-platinum live set "Captured"--"Generations" is the band's first new recording since its 2002, four-song EP "Red 13." Material on the new set harkens back to some of the group's classic works, according to guitarist Neal Schon.
"[Keyboardist/songwriter] Jon [Cain] and I got together and looked at our past on this record," Schon said in the group's record-company bio. "The strongest records we've done are "Escape" and "Frontiers," and we took a look at the music on those records and said, 'Let's just go back to what we had going on there, the mix of rock and Motown--less pop, more rock and soul."
"There's a real sense of harmony and melody on this album filled with heartfelt lyrics," Cain added. "It has the ballads that people would expect from us and the rock and roll that I think has the Journey signature sound to it."
The Sanctuary-issued version of "Generations" will contain two cuts--"The Pride of the Family" and "Never Too Late"--not found on the version of the album that the group is giving to fans at its concerts, according to the label. The complete tracklist appears below.
Journey--original members Schon (guitar) and Ross Valory (bass), longtime members Deen Castronovo (drums) and Cain (keyboards), and singer Steve Augieri, who took over for Steve Perry in the late '90s--is in the midst of a North American tour that celebrates the band's 30th anniversary. The itinerary, which is included below, stretches into early October.
