Lynyrd Skynyrd tour waylaid by illness

For the second time in as many months, Lynyrd Skynyrd has had to scrap several shows while singer Johnny Van Zant recovers from throat problems.

So far, the group has either postponed or canceled all shows from Aug. 11-21; of those, stops in Chillicothe, OH, and Sevierville, TN, have already been rescheduled. Organizers have not yet confirmed whether any of the remaining dates would be rescheduled or canceled. Details are included in the itinerary below.

Van Zant is "suffering from significant vocal cord inflammation and swelling," according to an announcement posted at the group's website, and is under "doctor's orders for strict vocal rest."

In June, Skynyrd had to postpone some shows while Van Zant recovered from "a severe case of strep throat," according to a press release issued at the time.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's most recent studio set is 2003's "Vicious Cycle." The group followed that up with last year's "Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyve," a double album and companion DVD that features the group's 2003 performance at the Nashville-area's Amsouth Amphitheatre.

Earlier this year, the band's 2003 best-of set, "Thyrty"--which marked the group's 30th anniversary--went platinum, signifying U.S. shipment of 1 million copies. In all, the group's catalog has been certified for sales in excess of more than 26 million albums.
