Neil Young to shoot concert film in Nashville

Veteran rocker Neil Young heads to Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium later this month for a two-night stand that will be caught on film by director Jonathan Demme.

During the Aug. 18-19 shows--Young's first since undergoing brain-surgery in March--the singer/songwriter will perform material from his upcoming album, "Prairie Wind," according to Reprise Records. The set, which Young recently recorded in Nashville and Northern California, is scheduled for release Sept. 27.

Ticket information was not available at press time. The Tennessean newspaper reported Sunday (7/31) that, because of the film shoot, organizers will "put in cameras and crew first and then fill in audience around them," and that "ticket info won't be available until three or four days" before the show.

Academy Award-winner Demme--whose credits include "The Silence of the Lambs" and the Talking Heads concert film "Stop Making Sense"--first collaborated with Young on the Demme-directed, 1993 film "Philadelphia," to which Young contributed the Oscar-nominated title track.

No release date for Young's concert film has been announced.

Backing Young on "Prairie Wind" were keyboardist Spooner Oldham, pedal-steel guitarist Ben Keith, drummer Chad Cromwell, percussionist Karl Himmel and bassist Rick Rosas. All are scheduled to appear at the Ryman Auditorium shows.

In addition to the Nashville shows, Young's plans also include performances at the Sept. 18 Farm Aid concert in the Chicago area, and at the Oct. 29-30 Bridge School Benefit at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA.
