Metallica to open for Rolling Stones in San Francisco
Bay Area metal kings Metallica haven't served as show-openers for years, but they'll return to that role in November when The Rolling Stones ' world tour touches down in San Francisco.
The Stones have tapped the group to open shows at San Francisco's SBC Park on Nov. 13 and 15. An additional opening act will also be named, according to a press release.
"Over the course of our career we've been fortunate enough to share the stage with a select few of the bands we grew up on, admired and respected including AC/DC, Deep Purple, Guns N' Roses and Iron Maiden," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said in a statement. "The only band that we have never played with but have always wanted to is The Rolling Stones.
"Having the opportunity to play with them this November in our hometown of San Francisco is both an honor and a privilege. And it's bound to be a lot of f---in' fun, especially since we haven't special-guested since 1992! These shows will enable us to recharge our batteries, both creatively and physically, as we prepare for the next phase of Metallica."
Tickets for the Nov. 13 show are sold out, but there are still some available for the Nov. 15 engagement. Members of Metallica's official fanclub have a chance to score member-only tickets for the gig. More information is available at the band's website.
Metallica--Ulrich, James Hetfield (vocals, guitar), Kirk Hammett (guitar) and Rob Trujillo (bass)--has been on a break since the late-2004 conclusion of its world tour behind 2003's "St. Anger."
The Rolling Stones kick off their world tour Aug. 21 at Boston's Fenway Park, and will issue a new album titled "A Bigger Bang" Sept. 8. On Tuesday (8/2), the group released exclusively via Apple's iTunes Music Store three cuts from the new set: "Rough Justice," "Streets of Love" and "Back of My Hand." More information is posted at the Stones' website.
