Fox probes Paula Abdul's alleged 'Idol' tryst

An "independent counsel" is investigating former "American Idol" finalist Corey Clark 's contention that he had a romance with Paula Abdul , during which the talent show's judge secretly coached him.

Fox Entertainment President Peter Ligouri, speaking to TV critics Thursday (7/29) in Beverly Hills, CA, reportedly said the investigation got underway following a May "Prime-time Live" story on ABC-TV, on which Clark originally made the allegations.

Ligouri said the probe is nearing its end, but may not be complete before production begins next month on the fourth season of "Idol." "American Idol" was the No. 1 TV show in the 18-49 demographic last season.

"At this point, we have nothing that specifically says she shouldn't be showing up for work," he told reporters, later adding, "Any allegations against this show we take seriously. The credibility of the competition is extraordinarily important to us."

Clark alleges that Abdul took him under her wing during the second season of "American Idol"--giving him tips and money for clothes, among other perks--during what he said was their secret romance. Though Clark was an "Idol" finalist, he was kicked off the show after it was revealed that he didn't tell the show's producers about a prior arrest.

In a statement issued after the story broke, Abdul called Clark "an admitted liar and opportunist who engages in unlawful activities. He is communicating lies about Paula Abdul in order to generate interest in a book deal."

The "American Idols Live " tour, featuring season-four winner Carrie Underwood, runner-up Bo Bice and eight other finalists, is currently on the road.
