Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott top VMA list

Veteran punk-rockers Green Day are vying for eight MTV Video Music Awards this year, two more than any other nominee.

Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott are up for six awards each, while U2 is in the running for five "Moonman" trophies.

Other acts nominated for multiple awards include Coldplay , Jennifer Lopez, The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Ciara, John Legend, Kanye West, The White Stripes, 50 Cent, Amerie, Destiny's Child, Eminem, Foo Fighters, The Game, Gorillaz, Kelly Clarkson, Ludacris, Mariah Carey, Shakira, Simple Plan, Snoop Dogg and Usher.

MTV announced the nominees Monday (7/25) in Miami, the city that will host the 22nd annual edition of the VMAs on Aug. 28.

Sean "P. Diddy" Combs has been tapped to host the ceremony, and the first batch of announced performers includes Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson and Green Day. For the first time, the VMAs will be scored with original music, to be composed by Lil Jon and Linkin Park producer Mike Shinoda.

According to a press release issued by MTV, the "underlying theme" of this year's show will be water. The same production company that erected the fountain in front of Las Vegas' Bellagio Hotel will engineer elaborate water effects inside the arena.

As they did last year, celebrities will arrive at the ceremony via yachts and in their "personally owned tricked out cars staging the first ever car show extravaganza on the red carpet."

Live performances will take place on five performance stages built in the center of the arena, and additional performances will take place at remote locations "to showcase key locales around Miami," according to MTV.

The VMA nominees in most categories were determined by the votes of a 500-member group that included viewers, record-label representatives, music journalists and video producers.
