In an interview posted on the foursome's official website, singer Gwen Stefani credited producer Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette) with sparking No Doubt in the studio, following the extensive touring in support its last record.
''Coming off of the Tragic Kingdom Tour, I think we were all a little bit hesitant to guess what would happen next,'' Stefani said. ''We hadn't been creative in so long that we weren't even sure if we could write new music. Glen truly helped to refuel our confidence. Working with Glen has allowed us to be the 'most No Doubt' we can be.''
Bassist Tony Kanal added that ''Return To Saturn'' is somewhat a product of the Southern California act's '80s influences. ''Musically, I would feel, it's safe to say that it's more mature...but if there is any one underlying theme it's our being influenced by '80s music. Whether we choose to admit it or not...I think it's a thread intertwining through our sound. It only makes sense, seeing as we grew up on that music.''
