MP3.com Sponsors Goo Goo Dolls, Tonic Fall Tour
The Goo Goo Dolls and Tonic have signed on to supply the tunes for what's being billed as the first music and technology tour of college campuses. The first of the events -- spearheaded by MP3.com and the William Morris Agency -- takes place Oct. 5 at the University of Iowa, and about 28 shows are planned in all.
On each campus, tour organizers will set up a festival area dubbed ``MP3.com Village,'' which will incorporate several tents and a nearby enclosed arena.
The arenas will host performances by the Goo Goo Dolls, Tonic, and a local opening artist culled from the approximately 23,000 who have made their digitally-encoded music available for download on the MP3.com website. Each event will also feature an evening rave showcasing local electronic DJs.
Several tents will be erected on the MP3.com Village areas. ''The Technology Hub'' will feature hardware, software and other computer-related technology companies, while ''Destination X'' will house extreme lifestyle companies, as well as related sports equipment and apparel companies. The villages will also include tents showcasing MP3 technology. For those who feel the need to spend a few bucks, concessions and merchandise will be available at each of the stops.
Tickets good for admittance to both the festival area and the concert will sell in the $20 range. A separate ''MP3.com Village'' ticket good only for the festival area will be about $10. Though most dates have been confirmed, it's expected that others will be added.
``We are carrying the general philosophy of our website over to the Music and Technology Tour -- maximum exposure to music, information and entertainment at minimal cost,'' MP3.com spokesman John Diaz said in a statement.
