1999 Tibetan Freedom Concert Acts, Venues Confirmed
Performers and concert venues were named on Friday for the fourth annual Tibetan Freedom Concert, structured this year as a global event that will take place in four spots on the globe. The individual shows, scheduled for June 13th, will each host multiple acts at venues in or near Chicago, Sydney, Amsterdam and Tokyo.
The US show will take place at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre some 90 miles outside of Chicago, and will feature performances by the Beastie Boys , Blondie , Live, Biz Markie, Outkast, The Roots, Otis Rush and Eddie Vedder.
The European show will happen at Amsterdam's Rai Parkhalle, and will feature sets by Ben Harper, Rage Against The Machine, Joe Strummer and Radiohead's Thom Yorke.
Sydney, Australia's chosen venue, the Main Arena at Sydney Showgrounds, is still awaiting clearance, but is expected to hos performances by the Avalanches, Neil Finn, the Living End, the Mavises and Regurgitator.
Tokyo will host the Asian show at Tokyo Bay NK Hall, which will feature Audio Active, Brahman, Buffalo Daughter, Hi-Standard, Scha Dara Parr, Kan Takagi and Kiyoshirou Imawano.
Since forming the Milarepa Fund in 1994, the Beastie Boys have organized three previous all-day concerts to raise awareness and money to fund support efforts for the people of the former sovereign nation of Tibet, which was occupied by China in 1949. To date, more than $2 million has been raised at concerts held in San Francisco, New York and Washington, DC.
1998's two-day concert was interrupted by a freak lightning strike that severely injured a woman during a set by Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters.
Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's Daily Show, will take part in a two-hour radio special on the day of the concert, which will feature highlights from the four stages hosting the show worldwide. Ongoing updates and mailings will be available via the show's official web site, at www.tibet99.com.
Ticketing details were not yet available, and additional acts are expected to be announced in coming weeks.
