Jack Johnson to embark on eco-friendly summer tour

March 14, 2005 04:26 PM
Jack Johnson plans to tour extensively this summer behind his latest album, "In Between Dreams," which entered the U.S. chart at No. 3 earlier this month.

The tour is scheduled to visit about 30 North American cities; tickets go on sale Saturday (3/19) in most markets, according to a press release.

Johnson--who has been a supporter of 1% for the Planet, an alliance of businesses that donate at least 1% of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations--is undertaking several measures to mitigate the environmental impact of the outing, according to a press release.

All tour busses and trucks will all run on Bio-Diesel fuel; the tour catering crew will recycle all food and beverage containers, and will donate leftover food to local shelters; tour merchandise will be made from eco-friendly materials; and $1 from each ticket sold will go to "offset the CO2 emissions produced by the concertgoers' travel to the show."

In addition, local environmental groups will be given table space at each venue, and Johnson will issue a new enhanced CD/DVD, proceeds from which will be donated to local 1% for the Planet organizations present at the shows.

Johnson will warm up for the outing by hosting the 2nd annual Kokua Festival, which will raise money for various environmental causes. Shows are set for April 13 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului, HI, and April 16 at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu. Jackson Browne, John Cruz, Ozomatli, G Love and Special Sauce, and slack key guitarist Kawika Kahiapo and his band Kaukahi will also appear on both dates.

"In Between Dreams" is Johnson's third album; his previous two releases--2001's "Brushfire Fairytales" and 2003's "On and On"--have been certified platinum.
