Garth Brooks gives rare performance at charity event

Country singer Garth Brooks , who retired from his wildly successful music career in 2000, performed at a Sunday (2/13) fundraiser that reportedly helped raise $1.8 million for a Fort Worth, TX, hospital.

Money from the $1,000-a-seat benefit at Fort Worth's Bass Concert Hall--which also featured Steve Wariner, Stephanie Davis and Dan Roberts--will go toward the hospital's purchase of a new brain-mapping machine. Performer/show organizer Roberts' 12-year-old daughter was successfully treated for a brain tumor at Cook Children's Medical Center, the event's beneficiary.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the four artists opened the show together, playing an acoustic set that included some of Brooks' hits. After a brief intermission, Brooks returned for a solo-acoustic set that featured covers of songs by Merle Haggard, George Strait, George Jones, Jim Croce, Bob Seger and Billy Joel.

In an interview with the Star-Telegram that was published days before the concert, Brooks said that his performance doesn't mean he's planning a comeback.

"I'm retired," he reportedly said. "I feel like I say no to people 150 times a day. I'm with my children, though, and that's where my love and my heart are."

When Brooks announced his retirement in April 2000, he left the door open to returning when his youngest daughter, now eight years old, turns 18.
