Briefly: Phil Anselmo on 'Dimebag' Darrell, Whitney Houston, Journey

December 17, 2004 07:51 AM
Former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo on Thursday (12/16) issued a public statement in response to the murder of his former bandmate, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

"I love Dimebag Darrell because there was not one motherf----- like him," Anselmo said. "I love him like a brother loves a brother."

Anselmo and the Abbott brothers--"Dimebag" Darrell and former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott--had been estranged since Anselmo quit the group in 2003. Prior to "Dimebag" Darrell's death, Anselmo had made hostile comments about the guitarist in various interviews. The feud led to the Abbott family asking Anselmo to not attend Abbott's funeral or memorial service.

"I never got a chance to say goodbye in the right way and it kills me," Anselmo said. "I wish to god I could've gone to his funeral, but I have to respect his family's wishes, and they do not want me there. I believe I belong there, but I understand completely."

Anselmo ended by saying that Abbott's death "has changed the entire world, and this is the last you'll be seeing of me for a long time. I hope you're happy, heavy metal music magazines, media, I hope you're happy. I'm done."
