Public memorial set for slain guitarist 'Dimebag' Darrell

Family, friends and fans of Damageplan /Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott--who last week was murdered on stage while performing--can pay tribute to him during a Tuesday (12/14) memorial in his home state of Texas.

The memorial will take place at the Convention Center in Arlington at 8 p.m. local time, according to a press release.

In addition to the public event, two memorial funds have been established for mourners who wish to make a donation in Abbott's name. The first, dubbed The Dimebag Darrell Memorial Fund, will help cover bereavement and medical expenses for Damageplan's security head, Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson, tour manager Chris Paluska, and drum tech John "Kat" Brooks; Thompson was killed and Paluska and Brooks injured during the Dec 8 shooting incident at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, OH.

Checks for The Dimebag Darrell Memorial Fund can be sent to 110 SW Thomas, Burleson, TX 76028.

A second memorial fund has been set up through VH1's Save the Music Foundation, which "purchases new musical instruments to restore music education programs that have been cut due to budget reductions in the past, or to save programs at risk of elimination due to lack of instruments," according to a statement. Checks should be directed to VH1 Save the Music Foundation, 1515 Broadway, 20th Floor, New York, NY 10036.

On Dec. 8, Abbott and his new band, Damageplan--which also featured his brother and former Pantera bandmate, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott--had just begun performing when 25-year-old Nathan Gale rushed onto the stage, grabbed "Dimebag" Darrell and fired multiple gunshots into him at close range. In addition to "Dimebag" Darrell and security head Thompson, Gale also shot and killed club employee Erin Halk and audience member Nathan Bray.

A police officer who responded to the scene shot and killed Gale--who had taken a hostage--with a single shotgun blast, according to published reports.

The Abbott brothers formed Damageplan last year after Pantera broke up. The group's debut album, "New Found Power," surfaced earlier this year.

The brothers were best known for their work with Pantera, which they formed in the early '80s, and which rose to fame in the '90s thanks to a string of successful albums. The group is widely considered to have had a significant influence on the metal genre, and Abbott in particular was recognized for his distinctive playing style.
