Paul McCartney to perform during Super Bowl halftime show
Paul McCartney has been tapped to perform during next year's Super Bowl Halftime show, which takes place at Jacksonville, FL's Alltel Stadium on Feb. 6.
"We are extremely pleased to work again with Paul McCartney, one of the greatest musicians of our time, to create a memorable show," Steve Bornstein, the NFL's executive vice president of media, said in a statement.
Said McCartney: "There's nothing bigger then being asked to perform at the Super Bowl. We're looking forward to rocking the millions at home and in the stadium."
The Super Bowl appearance will be McCartney's second. In 2002, he performed prior to Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans. There, McCartney performed his post-Sept. 11 song, "Freedom."
The National Football League signed MTV to produce its 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, and the event became infamous for Janet Jackson 's so-called "wardrobe malfunction" that resulted in the exposure of her left breast.
The league is taking a more conservative route this year, signing Don Mischer Productions--known for its work on the Emmy Awards, Barbara Streisand's Millennium concert, and The Kennedy Center Honors-- to produce the halftime show.
Last year's Super Bowl was seen by a record 144.4 million viewers in the U.S., according to the NFL.
