Hagar says he's not leaving Van Halen after tour

Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen have gone on the record to refute widespread rumors that Hagar and the group are on the verge of their second divorce.

"Listen here, all these crazy rumor flying around cyberspace are that," Hagar said in a statement posted at his website. "Plain and simple, I never said I was quitting Van Halen."

Hagar's statement comes in the wake of an Oct. 9 interview with St. Louis radio station KSHE, during which he reportedly made comments that led some listeners to believe he and the band would part ways after finishing up their current reunion tour.

The KSHE disc jockey who interviewed Hagar, who goes by the name Favazz, posted a message on the station's website in which he said that, "at the request of Sammy's publicist," he would not post a transcript of the interview until after the band's tour ends on Nov. 19.

"Many of you want to know if Sammy came right out and said that Van Halen is over after this tour," Favazz wrote. "He did not say that. However, what he did say leads me to believe that that is the case. That is my opinion ... ."

Last Friday (11/5), however, Kansas newspaper The Wichita Eagle quoted drummer Alex Van Halen as saying that the band plans to take a break after the tour and will then head into the studio to record a new album "with Sammy" on vocals.

At press time, a spokesperson for the band had not answered a request for an official comment.

In June, Van Halen launched its first tour with Hagar at the helm since an ugly 1996 split with the singer. "Best of Both Worlds," a greatest-hits collection containing three new songs featuring Hagar on vocals, followed in July.

The tour continues in Montreal on Tuesday (11/9), and wraps up in Tucson on Nov. 19.
