Label Claims Whitney Houston Tour Sets '99 Record

Pop R&B singer Whitney Houston 's current tour is the highest-grossing European arena tour this year, according to her label Arista Records.

Neither Arista nor Houston's management would disclose the actual dollar amount, only saying that her tour had sold out every date in advance and had been extended through Nov. 8. The tour covers Germany, Switzerland, the U.K., France, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Italy and Austria.

Houston's European tour follows last summer's American tour, her first in five years. Due to throat problems and bronchitis, Houston cancelled four of the dates, including an Aug. 1 date at the Concord Pavilion in the San Francisco Bay area.

The Pavilion has tried to regain from Houston's management almost $100,000 it had used to prepare for the show, said Mark Devon, director of leisure services for the city of Concord. He said that rescheduling the date was a ''point of discussion,'' but that nothing has been settled.

Houston is touring for her album ''My Love Is Your Love,'' which was certified triple platinum in the U.S. on October 15. The album has been on the Billboard 200 Chart for 49 weeks and spent six weeks at number one on the European charts. The gold-certified title song, written by Wyclef Jean and Jerry Duplessis, is currently number five on the R&B charts, where it has been for the last 14 weeks.

During her sprint across Europe, Houston shot a music video for ''I Learned from the Best.'' The song appears on the ''My Love is Your Love'' album and will be released as a single at the end of the year.

She will perform at the Point Theatre in Dublin on Nov. 11 for the MTV Europe Awards, which nominated her Best R&B Artist and Best Female Artist. She will face stiff competition from Britney Spears for the Best Female Artist award, which viewers choose by phone and Net polls. Other artists scheduled to perform are Mariah Carey , Marilyn Manson, Jamiroquai, the Offspring, Puff Daddy, the Corrs and Underworld.
