Live Review Hilary Duff in Phoenix
Kids rushed the stage, others squealed, and the majority of them waved green glow sticks in their little hands as teenage renaissance girl Hilary Duff spread her pop message to the sold-out masses Sunday afternoon (9/5) at Phoenix's Dodge Theatre.
As the lights went down, little girls chanted "Hil-ar-y" continuously until the TV, film and music star strolled on stage.
Duff kicked off her show on a self-assured note with "Girl Can Rock" as racing cars, booming speakers and the rear end of a car with the license plates "Duff" and "grrrl" quickly flashed on the video screen.
The screams for Duff and her opening act, younger sister Haylie Duff , were deafening. And after the second song, "Little Voice," the headliner encouraged the crowd to scream louder.
"What's up, everybody?" she asked. "I'm sorry. That was not loud enough!"
Her age, 16, charmingly showed through her in her stage banter.
"I hope you guys are gonna have a blast," she said after the audience screeched for her.
The squeals continued each time Duff spoke--even when she spoke of the perils of being a teenage superstar.
"I know you know this next song," she said about "So Yesterday." "I've been singing it for such a long time. I'm going to need as much help as possible."
She alluded to alleged media-derived feuds-- including one with fellow singer-actress Lindsey Lohan-- during the introduction to her new song "Hater." She dedicated it to everyone who is "talking bad about me" and saying "stuff" that isn't true. Duff brought it down to the audience's level by saying they must relate because they go through the same thing at school.
During her energetic one-and-a-half hour show, Duff zipped through her hits--"Why Not?," "Come Clean," as well as songs from her forthcoming self-titled album, due out Sept. 28. The audience, filled with parents and their mostly female, pre-teen children, cheered and sang along with nearly every song, including her new single "Fly."
Duff moved frenetically, using the entire stage to give the crowd an adequate view of her. Each time she moved toward the front of the stage, girls rushed it flailing their arms in the hopes of touching her. She often shook her leg to the beat, pointed upward and then shook her hair furiously.
"Metamorphosis," the title track from her most recent album, proved almost prophetic. From her first club tour through the current "Most Wanted" jaunt, Duff has morphed from an awkward teen performer to a fluid stage act who knows how to win over a crowd.
Hilary and the lackluster Haylie Duff, in separate sets, poked fun of audience members who decided to sit down during the performance. "I just wanted to let you guys know--I'm sorry to do this--for the next song, you have to stand up. Please stand up and help us out with this song," Hilary Duff said about "Party Up."
The elder Duff ended the afternoon performance with two covers. Haylie Duff arrived on stage from one side, her sister from the other, to perform their version of The Go-Go's "Our Lips are Sealed." Hilary Duff then went it alone for her now-trademark cover of The Who's "My Generation," ending the show on a note for the adults in the crowd.
