Indigo Girls' fall plans mix activism, touring
The always politically active folk-rock duo Indigo Girls will be on the road steadily through at least early November, performing for various causes and playing a slate of headlining dates.
Singer/songwriters Amy Ray and Emily Saliers open their next round of appearances Sept. 6 in Charleston, WV, where they'll appear at a Labor Day Rally with Jesse Jackson and Willie Nelson.
"The theme of the rally is Reinvest In America/Put America Back To Work," Ray wrote recently on her group's website. "I am hoping as we support the United Mine Workers and the AFL-CIO, we are helping to make the coalition between unions and environmentalists stronger."
Indigo Girls are also scheduled to make special appearances at three of Ani DiFranco's upcoming Vote Dammit shows, which aim to register progressive voters and encourage them to cast their ballots.
The duo will then play an Oct. 1 benefit in Salt Lake City, proceeds from which will go to Honor the Earth, "a national organization that raises funds and public support for Native environmental groups," according to a press release. A month-long headlining tour follows; the full itinerary is below.
"All That We Let In," Indigo Girls latest album, hit stores in February. The set features Ray and Saliers along with their longtime backing band: bassist Clare Kenny, keyboardist Carol Isaacs and drummer Brady Blade. Joan Osborne also appears on the album; the singer/pianist contributed back-up vocals to three tracks.
