George Strait saddles up for concerts, readies hits compilation

George Strait hits the road this week for a brief string of shows in Western Canada, as well as some U.S. headlining dates and festival appearances.

The veteran country singer launches the Canadian run on Thursday (7/15), and will play a half-dozen dates in that country before turning his attention to a handful of U.S. performances. Details are shown below.

Organizers claim that Strait sold over 80,000 tickets in Canada in one day, and that the high demand led to an extra Edmonton stop and two additional Calgary shows.

Strait's stateside plans include a July 23 headlining performance in Cheyenne, WY, which kicks off this year's Cheyenne Frontier Days concert series. Tickets for that show sold out in under a week, while sales for his July 24 show at the Qwest Center in Omaha, NE, broke the venue's record for the most tickets sold on the first day of availability, according to Strait's publicist.

Strait--who has sold more than 57 million records over the course of his 20-plus-year recording career--released his latest studio album, "Honkytonkville," in June of last year. On Oct. 5, MCA will issue a new best-of set titled "50 #1 Hits," which features Strait's latest single "I Hate Everything." The cut, which debuted at No. 41 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, is the only new song on the collection.
