Wilco laying out concert plans for August
Wilco wraps up a European tour behind its new album, "A Ghost is Born," later this month, and will follow up with a short series of North American shows.
Initially, Wilco planned to play a few summer Lollapalooza shows, but the cancellation of that tour has led the Chicago-based group to make other plans.
The band's North American outing is now scheduled to open in Milwaukee on Aug. 2, and five additional appearances--including three Canadian stops--are set in the week that follows. Details are in the itinerary below.
Joining Wilco's touring band this year are keyboardist/guitarist Pat Sansone (The Autumn Defense) and guitarist Nels Cline. Earlier this year, the band announced the departure of multi-instrumentalist Leroy Bach, who officially joined the band before the release of 2002's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." Programmer/keyboardist Mikael Jorgenson has since taken over Bach's slot.
The only remaining original members of Wilco are frontman/guitarist Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt. Drummer Glen Kotche replaced Ken Coomer before "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" was recorded, and multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett exited after "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" was completed.
"A Ghost is Born" was issued on June 22, but it was streaming in its entirety at the band's website for months before its release, and remains online.
Fans who purchase "A Ghost is Born" can--using the CD's enhanced content--access a live recording of a recent Wilco show at Chicago's Vic Theatre via the band's site.
Wilco streamed "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" over the Internet long before the set's official release--and even before the band had signed with Nonesuch, the label that eventually released it. The set turned out to be Wilco's best-selling album to date.
Earlier this year, Wilco called off a planned eight-city tour of North America after it was reported that Tweedy had checked himself into a Chicago rehab clinic for treatment of an addiction to painkillers that he developed while battling migraine headaches.
