Jewel Lines Up Benefit Single, Holiday Music Collection
Taking advantage of her upcoming forum at NetAid, singer/songwriter Jewel will release a benefit single on Oct. 12 that features a previously unreleased live version of "Life Uncommon," a track from her current album "Spirit" (Atlantic).
Jewel's proceeds from sales of the single will be donated to the Clearwater Project, a program of Higher Ground for Humanity. The non-profit organization -- which was founded by Jewel and her mother and manager Nedra Carroll -- works to bring clean drinking water to impoverished parts of the world.
The new track was recorded on Sept. 14 for a forthcoming holiday installment for PBS TV's ''Sessions At West 54th,'' which will air in December.
Jewel will perform at the NetAid benefit show at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, one of the three concerts scheduled for Oct. 9 to promote worldwide poverty awareness. The Giants Stadium bill will also feature Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes, Counting Crows, Wyclef Jean with Bono, Jimmy Page & friends, Puff Daddy, Sting with Cheb Mami, The Black Crowes, and Zucchero.
In other news from Jewel's camp, Atlantic Records has set a Nov. 2 release date for her third studio album, ''Joy - A Holiday Collection.'' The album features Jewel's take on Yuletide standards like ''Silent Night,'' ''O Holy Night'' and ''Winter Wonderland,'' as well as a Christmas-themed version of her hit ''Hands.''
Jewel is also scheduled to join country music legend Merle Haggard at the Hilton Showroom in Las Vegas for ''Merle Haggard: For The Record,'' a live pay-per-view TV special that will air on Oct. 2. She recorded two duets with Haggard for his recently released ''For The Record'' compilation.
In addition, Jewel will make her big screen debut in the Ang Lee film ''Ride With The Devil,'' which is tentatively set to open in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 24.
