Briefly: Michael Jackson, Morrissey, Pearl Jam, Ricky Martin
A judge in Santa Maria, CA, has set a tentative Sept. 13 start-date for Michael Jackson 's child-molestation trial.
"Without that bullseye to shoot at, we're going to have a continual dilemma with discovery," Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville told reporters on Friday (5/28). "I think it's critical that I set a trial date and that we try to get to that point."
Some legal experts feel the judge's target date is unrealistic, and speculate that--due to extensive discovery and the large numbers of witnesses--jury selection isn't likely to begin until October.
Morrissey called off a planned one-week residency on "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn" this week. According to a statement issued by Morrissey's label, the cancellation was due to "the strain of his schedule and a recent bout of meningitis."
"The Late Late Show" had planned to air a Morrissey segment each day this week.
Pearl Jam 's Rumor Pit web page is beginning to tease fans with word of some new activity from the band. But, as usual, the band-sanctioned Rumor Pit is big on hedges and short on specifics.
"There are some really cool Pearl Jam happenings being worked on for this fall," reads a message on the site. "There could be some shows--maybe acoustic, maybe not, a possible CD of some sort, and it's possible the band may head back to the studio towards the end of the year to begin work on their eighth album. As far as new music from side projects goes, some releases are possible but not definite."
Ricky Martin , participating in a campaign against the sex trafficking of minors, has filmed a series of television advertisements for his People for Children Foundation.
