Santana sets California shows before and after European gigs

Carlos Santana and his eponymous band will warm up for their upcoming European outing with some California gigs, and will also end their summer in the Golden State.

The band is set to play three nights at San Francisco's famed Warfield Theatre June 22-24 before spending all of July touring Europe. On Sept. 30, Santana plays the first of two nights at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

Tickets for the first show at the Warfield--which has a capacity of just 2,700--are available exclusively to members of Santana's fan club. Details are posted at Santana's website.

Santana's European tour--the dates for which are also posted at the site--will mark the debut of The Salvador Santana Band as their opening act. Salvador, who plays keyboards in the mostly instrumental band, is the son of Carlos and Deborah Santana. "While nothing is planned, as the tour unfolds, intergenerational Santana jams are a distinct possibility," said a press release announcing the trek. The Salvador Santana Band joins the outing beginning with Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival July 13-15.

The elder Santana continues to work on a follow-up to his 2002 album, "Shaman," which will be his third straight set to be executive produced by Arista Records founder Clive Davis. The first, 1999's "Supernatural," picked up nine Grammys, including Album of the Year.

Santana has issued 38 albums since he and his group first gained wide recognition at the original Woodstock festival in 1969.
