Brian Wilson to issue completed version of 'lost' album
Brian Wilson is set to release an all-new studio recording of the previously scrapped album "Smile," 37 years after it was to surface as the follow-up to The Beach Boys ' landmark "Pet Sounds" album.
The newly completed "Smile"--which is scheduled to hit stores on Sept. 28--will be produced by Wilson, and will feature the 10-member band that has accompanied him on tour for the last five years, as well as The Stockholm Strings and Horns. Wilson is currently finishing the recording at Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles, according to his official website.
Wilson and lyricist Van Dyke Parks--who collaborated on the "Smile" sessions in 1966 and 1967--listened to the original tapes last November, after Wilson announced plans to complete "Smile" and perform it at a series of concerts in London. Darian Sahanaja, of Wilson's touring band, began preparing music for the performance, leading Wilson and Parks to start working on new material for the performance.
The finished "Smile" made its public debut during a Feb. 20 concert at London's Royal Festival Hall. The original version of "Smile" was never released, but several tracks that were recorded for the album were issued on other Beach Boys albums.
In addition to "Smile," Wilson is scheduled to issue "Gettin' In Over My Head," his first new studio album in more than six years, on June 22. It features guest appearances by Eric Clapton, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Wilson's late brother Carl.
Wilson plans to tour the U.K. this summer, and will follow up with a U.S. tour in the fall. The itineraries haven't been announced.
