Briefly: Tom Petty, Usher, The Who, John Whitehead, Mike Watt
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' upcoming releases will include a live album and a new best-of set, Petty said in a recent interview.
In the interview, which was posted this week on his band's official website, Petty said that he and sound engineer Robert Scovill are sorting through live material, trying to narrow it down for a two-disc release. Petty said it's possible that the live set could be out by the end of the year.
Also in the works, he said, is "Greatest Hits, Part II," which could include some new material. No release date has been announced.
Usher 's "Confessions" returns to No. 1 on The Billboard 200 album chart this week, one week after D12's "D12 World" knocked the R&B star from the top slot, Billboard reports. "Confessions" has now logged six weeks at No. 1.
"D12 World" falls to No. 2 in its second week in stores, while Prince's "Musicology" holds steady at No. 3.
Petey Pablo's "Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry" debuts in the No. 4 slot, pushing Diana Krall's "The Girl in the Other Room" down one place to No. 5.
Dozens of tickets to The Who 's May 22 appearance at New York's Madison Square Garden--all within the first 12 rows--are being auctioned online for charity.
A portion of the ticket sales will benefit cancer research, treatment and education at City of Hope, according to a press release. More information is available at the event's Ticketmaster auction site. (Ticketmaster is liveDaily's parent company.)
The auction runs through Monday (5/17) at 7 p.m. ET.
John Whitehead, half of the R&B duo McFadden & Whitehead , was shot dead on Tuesday (5/11) in Philadelphia, according to published reports. He was 55.
Whitehead and another man reportedly were working on a vehicle when two men fired about a dozen shots at them and fled. Police didn't immediately identify any suspects or possible motive.
McFadden & Whitehead's best-known song is the 1979 hit "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now."
The release date of Mike Watt 's "The Secondman's Middle Stand" has been pushed back to Aug. 24.
"There just wasn't enough time to get things together enough," Watt wrote on his website. "Like my product manager (who I respect much), Peter Fletcher, said: 'It's been a while since your last record and we should set this up right,' and I couldn't agree more."
Watt, who was a founding member of Southern California punk rockers Minutemen, has described the new album as his "illness piece," documenting his bout with a painful intestinal abscess a few years back.
