REO Speedwagon plots tour dates, eyes studio time

Classic rockers REO Speedwagon maintain their busy tour schedule this spring and summer, then turn their attention to the recording studio.

The group, which logged a round of tour dates earlier this year, returns to the road on April 16 to tackle a loose-knit itinerary that stretches into September. The run includes a number of stops on the fair circuit.

Band founder Kevin Cronin outlined the band's plan of attack for 2004 in a message posted earlier this year at the group's website.

"We are utilizing our sound checks to work on new song ideas," he wrote. "This year looks to be a mixture of short touring runs, rehearsal and songwriting in L.A., and then into the studio later in the year. We are looking forward to recording new music, it has been too long to make you guys wait ... but we sure appreciate you hanging in there with us."

No word yet on when the group plans to release the new material. The group's most-recent release is 2001's "Live: Plus." That same year, Styx and REO Speedwagon--who have toured together frequently in recent years--co-released the live set "Arch Allies."
