The Dead set summer tour plans with Gov't Mule's Warren Haynes

The surviving members of The Grateful Dead once again will return to the summer amphitheater circuit under the moniker The Dead , this time with a slightly revamped supporting cast.

Joining core members Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir on this summer's outing will be vocalist/guitarist Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule, who made his Dead debut during the Feb. 9 Winter Jam concert at San Francisco's Warfield.

Guitarist Jimmy Herring--who paid his jam-band dues over the last dozen years by playing in Col. Bruce Hampton's Aquarium Rescue Unit, Jazz is Dead and The Allman Brothers Band --and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti (from Weir's Ratdog) remain in The Dead this year.

Vocalist Joan Osbourne and keyboardist Rob Barraco (of Phil Lesh & Friends), who both toured with The Dead in 2003, won't be along for this year's ride.

Haynes will pull double duty on several shows; he's scheduled to open the dates with an acoustic set. (He'll play between Dead sets during the tour's Hartford, CT, stop.) Robert Hunter will open other shows; details are in the itinerary below.

The Dead's tour gets underway with a June 12 appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, and its first leg--which includes four shows at the Denver area's Red Rocks--runs though July 3. The second leg runs from July 23 through Aug. 19.

A limited number of tickets are currently available through The Dead's mail-order ticket service; tickets will go on sale through traditional outlets on April 17, according to the band's official website.

In August of 2002, during an event at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI, the surviving members of The Grateful Dead performed together for the first time since the death of Jerry Garcia. In 2003, they changed their name from The Other Ones to the Dead.

The Grateful Dead performed their last show in Chicago on July 9, 1995. Singer-guitarist Garcia died a month later in California after he suffered a heart attack at a substance-abuse treatment facility.
