Goo Goo Dolls Cancel Participation In MTV's "Millennium Party Plane" Contest After Plane Scare In Sicily

Following a skid landing at a naval air station in Sicily last Monday, the Goo Goo Dolls have decided that they won't hop aboard MTV's "Millennium Party Plane" on New Year's Eve.

"They're not in the mood for planes right now," said the band's manager.

Before the rough landing in Sicily, the Goo Goo Dolls had just finished six shows for troops in Bosnia and a show on the aircraft carrier USS Kennedy. They were landing at the Sigonella naval air station, located on the west end of the Mediterranean island, when the plane slid off the runway, according to Reuters. None of the thirty people on the plane were hurt, including the band, its entourage and military personnel. The military said it would investigate the cause of the faulty landing, which occurred during rain, lightning and high winds.

For MTV's grand-prize flight around the world on a DC-10, the band was scheduled to join the ten contest winners from London to New York. 98 Degrees and DJ Skribble are still scheduled to fly on the party plane.

The Goo Goo Dolls will still play MTV's "2 Large Party" on Dec. 31. Other artists include Christina Aguilera, 98 Degrees, Jay-Z, Blink-182, Puffy, and Bush. The performances start at 5 p.m. (EST).
