Elliott Smith autopsy doesn't rule out foul play

A Los Angeles coroner's examination failed to determine conclusively if singer-songwriter Elliott Smith died of self-inflicted stab wounds or if he was attacked.

Smith died at a hospital on Oct. 21, after his live-in girlfriend found him with a stab wound to his chest in his Los Angeles apartment. Police initially listed the death as an apparent suicide.

"Despite a comprehensive and ongoing inquiry into the death by the LAPD detectives and coroner investigators together with a thorough examination by the coroner's pathologist, the mode of death remains 'Undetermined' due to incomplete knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the death," said a press release issued by the coroner.

While early reports said that Smith died of a single stab wound, the coroner's report said that Smith died of two stab wounds to his chest.

Smith battled various addictions during his life, but the autopsy found no traces of illegal or controlled substances in his system. Los Angeles police haven't closed their investigation into his death.

Smith, who was 34, picked up a 1998 Oscar nomination for "Miss Misery," a song from the movie "Good Will Hunting."
