Rage Against the Machine, "Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium" (Epic)

On Sept. 12 and 13 of 2000, Rage Against the Machine played two shows at L.A.'s historic Grand Olympic Auditorium, which turned out to be the band's final performances together.

This Rick Rubin-produced CD (a companion DVD package is available separately) covers Rage rockers like "Bullet in the Head," "War Within a Breath," "Sleep Now in the Fire" and perennial anthem "Killing in the Name," as well as covers of MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" and EPMD's "I'm Housin'."

Three-fourths of Rage has moved on to form Audioslave (with Chris Cornell), and no doubt vocalist Zack De La Rocha is still fighting the good fight, but at one point this quartet was the most vicious right-cross in rock. This is an excellent document from a band with a lot of heart--whether or not you agreed with the messages or messenger.

De La Rocha's politics aside, the band is tight no matter who's singing. Tom Morello's guitar wizardry (the pseudo-scratching never gets old) is ably backed up by bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk, who were playing the show ... as if it was their last.
