Briefly: Jane's Addiction, Marilyn Manson, Courtney Love, Gary Stewart, Wal-Mart downloads
More details have emerged about the cancellation of a December/January tour that was to feature Jane's Addiction and Marilyn Manson .
"Due to exhaustion brought on by a rigorous touring schedule, Jane's Addiction has decided to call off our holiday run of the East and all head south to the equator, where we hope to find rest and a new perspective for 2004," frontman Perry Farrell said in a statement posted on the band's official website. "We apologize to all of our fans and hope that they will understand. We will see everyone in the New Year and happy holidays!"
A free, limited-license download of the new Courtney Love single "Mono" is available at Love's official website. Love's first solo album, "America's Sweetheart," is due in stores on Feb. 10.
Country singer-songwriter Gary Stewart , whose best-known songs include "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)," "Drinkin' Thing" and "Out of Hand," was found dead in his Fort Pierce, FL, home on Tuesday (12/16). He was 59.
The Palm Beach Post reported that Stewart apparently committed suicide; he reportedly was found in his bed with a gunshot wound to his neck.
Retailing behemoth Wal-Mart has launched a no-frills digital-downloads area on its website, offering songs for 88 cents each. Other sites charge 99 cents per song.
Wal-Mart claims it is offering "hundreds of thousands" of downloads, and plans to upgrade the site before it's formally launched in the spring. But, like in its stores, Wal-Mart won't sell downloads with content it deems offensive. Many tracks are marked "edited."
