Former Smashing Pumpkin D'Arcy Faces Crack Cocaine Charge

Former Smashing Pumpkins bassist D'Arcy Wretzky, who left the band last year and was replaced with former Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, is due in court on Feb. 14 to answer to charges that she purchased three bags of crack cocaine in Chicago's West Town district on Jan. 25.

Police allege that plainclothes officers saw Wretzky and a man enter a building and return to their car a short time later. Police pulled over the car after it allegedly drove off without headlights and made two illegal U-turns, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Officers said they found the rock cocaine in the pocket of the car's driver, identified as Tony Young. Later, Wretzky reportedly admitted giving the rock cocaine to Young after he told police she had given it to him to hold.

Drug-related troubles have touched D'Arcy's former band in the past. Smashing Pumpkins' drummer Jimmy Chamberlin recently returned to he band, but he was kicked out by frontman Billy Corgan for a time because of Chamberlin's drug use. Chamberlin was with Smashing Pumpkins' touring keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin when he died of a heroin overdose in 1996.

Since leaving the Smashing Pumpkins in September, Wretzky has been pursuing an acting career in Los Angeles.
