CD Review: Pink, "Try This" (Arista)

Pink has shown her true colors since her teeny-bop, R&B-laden debut. On her sophomore effort, "Missundaztood," she displayed her rock and pop chops. And on "Try This," she successfully completes the transition into full-fledged rocker.

As she did on "Missundaztood," Pink collaborated on a handful of the new album's tunes with former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman Linda Perry--whose vocal style is eerily similar to Pink's. The surprise here is Pink's collaboration on eight of the 13 tracks with Rancid singer-songwriter Tim Armstrong.

On "Waiting for Love," Pink's vocals rival those of Robert Plant in his prime. On "Humble Neighborhoods"--with its dirty, staccato, Clash-like guitar--Pink comes across as a female fronting Rancid. "Try Too Hard" is a swirling, guilty pleasure worthy of play on any album-rock station--though rock radio may be hesitant to support a former teen-pop sensation.

Pink's probably got an uphill battle to completely win over the rockers, but "Try This" should create lots of converts.
