Johnny Cash, Alan Jackson win three CMA Awards apiece

The late country legend Johnny Cash was honored with three trophies at Wednesday's (11/5) 37th Annual CMA Awards, tying Alan Jackson for the night's top showing.

Cash's cover of the Trent Reznor-penned song "Hurt" won Single of the Year, and its video won Music Video of the Year. The Cash album on which "Hurt" appears, "American IV: The Man Comes Around," won Album of the Year.

Son John Carter Cash and daughter Kathy Cash accepted the awards for their father, who died on Sept. 17 at age 71.

"My father's work came to completion at the end of his life not at the end of this record," John Carter Cash said. "I've never seen a man more dedicated and stronger than that man. My father's memory will live on in my heart, and I know in all of your hearts."

Cash, who hadn't won a CMA for Album of the Year since 1968, was also named the fourth recipient of the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence, which honors outstanding achievements in country music.

The night ended with a musical tribute to Cash that featured performances by Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson; Travis Tritt and Sheryl Crow; Hank Williams Jr.; and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Alan Jackson picked up awards for Entertainer of the Year, as well as his second straight Male Vocalist of the Year trophy. He rounded out his haul by taking home the Vocal Event of the Year Award with Jimmy Buffett for their single "It's Five O' Clock Somewhere." Jackson has won 16 CMA Awards over the course of his career.

Martina McBride won her second straight Female Vocalist of the Year Award, and Brooks & Dunn were named Vocal Duo of the Year for the 11th time.

The Horizon Award, which the Country Music Association awards to "the artist who has demonstrated significant growth in country music over the past year," went to Joe Nichols.

Toby Keith received seven nominations--more than any other artist this year--but didn't win any awards.

The ceremony, which took place at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House, was hosted by Vince Gill for the 12th consecutive year.
