CD Review: Limp Bizkit, "Results May Vary" (Flip / Interscope)

Despite the advance hype about the "new" Limp Bizkit , there's--truth be told--not a wealth of difference between 1999's breakthrough "Significant Other," 2000's "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water" and the new release "Results May Vary."

In general, with Bizkit the results don't vary: they're fairly clear-cut. If you can get past Fred Durst's drone-to-cookie-monster vocals and head-shakingly insipid lyrics, there's a lot to like. Really. Case in point: after the comedic opening, "Re-Entry" is jagged enough to make Dream Theater fans take notice. And certainly Who fans will be noticing the cover of "Behind Blue Eyes," where Durst actually gets away with a little--gasp--singing.

But the best results come through in their mid-tempo swagger. The atmospheric "Down Another Day," "Almost Over," "Build a Bridge," "Let Me Down" and "Phenomenon" have a swingin' funk bounce to them, mostly thanks to Sam Rivers' low end and drummer John Otto's ghost-notes.

Instrumentally, this is infectious enough to work on many different levels. The key to how deep the infection gets is how much--or little--you appreciate Durst's vocal approach.
