Report: Johnny Cash hopes to attend MTV Video Music Awards
Johnny Cash , who is up for six MTV Video Music Awards this year and, at 71 years old, is the oldest artist to ever receive a nomination for the honor, reportedly hopes to be on hand for Thursday's (8/28) ceremony.
The country great, who is stricken with the nervous-system disease autonomic neuropathy and has been in poor health for years, hopes to travel to New York's Radio City Music Hall for the ceremony, which MTV will broadcast live.
"He's planning on it," Rosanne Cash, his daughter, told the Associated Press.
Cash was hospitalized with pneumonia--a common side effect of his ailment--in April, and his wife, June Carter Cash, died after undergoing heart surgery in May.
Cash's six VMA nominations are all for his remake of the Nine Inch Nails track "Hurt." The video--which makes no attempt to hide Cash's frailty--was directed by Mark Romanek and filmed at Cash's Tennessee home and at the nearby House of Cash Museum. It features a cameo by Cash's late wife.
Also nominated for multiple VMAs this year are Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott (eight nominations), Justin Timberlake (seven nominations) and Radiohead, Jennifer Lopez, Queens of the Stone Age, The White Stripes, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce (four each).
Among the confirmed performers at this year's VMAs are 50 Cent, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Coldplay, Good Charlotte and Metallica .
Scheduled presenters include Kelly Clarkson, P. Diddy, DMX, Hilary Duff, Duran Duran, Missy Elliot, Evanescence, Jimmy Fallon, Iggy Pop, Jay-Z, Avril Lavigne, Lil Jon, Ludacris, Method Man, Mya, Dave Navarro, Nelly, Sean Paul, Pharrell, Redman, Snoop Dogg and Britney Spears.
Also scheduled to appear are Pamela Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Jason Biggs, puppets from Comedy Central's "Crank Yankers," Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, the cast of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," David Spade, Ben Stiller and Serena Williams.
