"Greatest Hits Volume II and Some Other Stuff," the latest release from country star Alan Jackson [ tickets ], sold more than 328,000 copies in the U.S. during its first week in stores, and will debut at No. 1 on the pop and country album charts, according to industry sources.

Jackson's publicist, citing SoundScan, said in a statement that the set scored the highest weekly sales total of any country release in 2003. Debuting at No. 2 on the forthcoming pop album chart will be Dashboard Confessional's "A Mark. A Mission. A Brand. A Scar," which sold about 200,000 fewer copies than "Greatest Hits Volume II."

Along with 18 well-known songs from throughout Jackson's career, the best-of set features two new tracks: the current hit "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," which he recorded earlier this year with Jimmy Buffett at Buffett's Key West studio, and the Jackson-penned track "Remember When."

"Drive," Jackson's previous album, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's pop and country album charts on Feb. 2, 2002. Later that year, he amassed five Country Music Association Awards, which placed him in a tie with Merle Haggard, Vince Gill and Johnny Cash for most wins in a single night. He also picked up a pair of trophies at the Academy of Country Music Awards, including Album of the Year for "Drive."

"Drive" was the No. 8 top-selling album of 2002 thanks to a year-end total of about 3 million copies, and the Recording Industry Association of America has certified the album quadruple platinum for shipping more than 4 million copies in the U.S.

Jackson's "Greatest Hits Volume II" video collection was released last week on VHS, and a DVD version is due for release on Sept. 9.

Jackson, a Georgia native, has become one of country music's most bankable acts over the years, and has sold more than 36 million albums since his 1989 debut, "Here in the Real World," according to his label.

Near-constant touring has been an important factor in Jackson's success, and he doesn't appear to be changing that winning formula. He's been on the road nearly nonstop since the release of "Drive," and his current itinerary stretches into November.
