Martin Sexton transitions from summer to fall with more tour dates

Singer-songwriter Martin Sexton , who last year released the live set "Live Wide Open," kicks off another round of tour dates in late August.

Dates so far stretch into early October. November and December dates will surface soon, according to Sexton's website. His plans originally included a Saturday (8/16) performance at SummerStage Music Fest, part of Vermont's Festival of the Arts, but organizers canceled all of the concerts scheduled for the three-day event due to poor advance ticket sales, according to the festival's website.

Though he does record with a band, Sexton almost always performs alone while on tour. Armed with an acoustic guitar, he adds bass lines using his thumb.

"I'm going to keep it stripped down on the road," he said in a biography posted at his website. "I think there's a surprise element to one guy on stage sounding like three. The road and the records are two very different things. It's like a dual life."

Known for his penchant to tour almost non-stop--in 2001, he logged a total of 80,000 miles while on tour--Sexton is taking to the road despite the absence of a new release. "Live Wide Open" landed in stores in April of last year, and he issued his most-recent studio set, "Wonder Bar," about three years ago.

The Boston-based folk musician produced "Wonder Bar" himself, and tried to give the album a stripped-down feel.

"I wanted the record to sound natural and true, a little sweaty with some fat on it, nothing too clean," he said. "There are a lot of little mistakes on there, which I think are beautiful."

Sexton, a native of Syracuse, NY, moved to Boston to nurture his musical career, and in 1992 released a self-produced demo titled "In the Journey." The cassette-only release has sold more than 23,000 copies, according to his biography.
