Los Lobos give 'Aztlan' audiophile treatment as summer tour continues

August 8, 2003 02:03 PM
Los Lobos will re-release a Super Audio CD version of their latest album, "Good Morning Aztlan," on Sept. 26 as they wind down their summer tour supporting the collection.

Mobile Fidelity re-mastered the album using new systems that, in an SACD-compatible player, claim sound quality five times greater than standard CDs. The new release will also provide a full Dolby 5.1 surround-sound mix of the album.

The band has spent much of the summer on a co-headlining run with blues legend Buddy Guy.

The Los Lobos setlist database reports that, at a tour stop at North Tonawanda, NY's New Melody Fair Theatre, the band was to perform in the round on a rotating circular center stage. The day before the band's performance, the motor reportedly blew out, forcing the band to work in instrumental breaks every few songs to accompany the stage crew while they came out and manually pushed the turntable stage to face another portion of the audience.

The band has filmed a segment of a PBS docu-drama called "The Blues," scheduled to air in the fall. The six-part series will reportedly explore the lives of several blues artists, blending historical archival footage with some fictional re-enactments and new performances of their songs by current artists. Several directors are involved in the project, including Martin Scorcese, Wim Wenders, Mike Figgis and Charles Burnett. Artists involved include Los Lobos, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed, Cassandra Wilson and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

"Good Morning Aztlan" won a California Music Award in May for Outstanding Latin Album.
