Allman Brothers Band to sell instant concert recordings
The Allman Brothers Band will began selling live CD's of their concerts next week in an alliance with concert and radio-industry giant Clear Channel Entertainment.
The arrangement allows fans to purchase copies of shows they've just attended, recorded directly from the soundboard and mixed in real-time. As the show ends, on-site duplication facilities will, in theory, be able to generate CD's for purchase in a matter of minutes.
According to a Clear Channel press statement, the system will go through a dry run with this weekend's Allman Brothers Band shows and CD sales are expected to begin with the tour's North Carolina stops in Charlotte and Raleigh.
The Allman Brothers Band has long advocated taping of their concerts, and have established a tape trading post on their website allowing tapers to post shows they have or want.
While many acts have developed active bootleg-trading communities, the sale of authorized live CD's and downloads is an idea gathering steam in recent years. Pearl Jam and Phish have both developed band-run systems for selling concert recordings, and The String Cheese Incident makes selected songs from recent shows available for free.
The current Allman Brothers Band tour supports their first studio release in nine years, "Hittin' the Note."
