ZZ Top sets new album-release date, plots more shows
Texas rockers ZZ Top return from Europe next month and will kick off another round of U.S. tour dates, many of which will feature fellow rock veteran Ted Nugent .
The group's latest swing through the states is part of its ongoing Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers tour. The run kicked off in late April, a time frame originally chosen to coincide with the planned April 15 release of the group's new album, "Mescalero." The release date has since been pushed back to Sept. 9 due to restructuring at the band's label, RCA Records.
"[ZZ Top members] Billy [Gibbons], Frank [Beard] and Dusty [Hill] delivered an album of great quality and substance back in April," RCA Records Senior Vice President of Artist Development said in a statement. "At that time we felt that, in the interest of the band and their music, it deserved a well-planned and coherent roll out program. Rather than rush it out, we consulted with the band and their management who agreed to wait until an optimal release circumstance could be formulated."
Titled "Mescalero," ZZ Top's latest release is the group's first new studio set since 1999's "XXX." The album clocks in at just over an hour and features 15 original tracks, as well as the group's rendition of the 1967 Otis Redding and Carla Thomas duet "Tramp."
"The album has some of that old ZZ sound," guitarist Gibbons said in a statement. "It's the same three guys playing the same three chords but we've gone in some new directions with them."
Bassist Hill added: "You'll know it's ZZ Top right away but we've kept it interesting and fresh."
Gibbons, Hill and drummer Frank Beard formed ZZ Top in Houston in 1970. The group gained widespread commercial appeal with its 1983 album "Eliminator" and its 1985 set "Afterburner," which collectively spawned a slew of hits such as "Legs," "Sharp Dressed Man," "Sleeping Bag," "Velcro Fly" and more.
Nugent's most recent album is last September's "Craveman," which marks his first release on Spitfire Records. The Detroit-based rocker is also supporting "Full Bluntal Nugity," a concert DVD recorded in front of a hometown crowd at Detroit's DTE Energy Music Theatre. The disc also includes bonus footage culled from throughout Nugent's career.
