Cake assembles Cheap Trick, others for sophomore Unlimited Sunshine Tour
The second edition of the Unlimited Sunshine Tour--an eclectic package led by pop-rockers Cake that debuted last year--is set to travel the club and theater circuits for three weeks in September.
Joining the Sacramento group this year will be rock veterans Cheap Trick , underground-rockers The Detroit Cobras , bluegrass group The Hackensaw Boys and 76-year-old country legend Charlie Louvin of The Louvin Brothers.
Cake's latest album release was 2001's "Comfort Eagle," which spawned the hit "Short Skirt/Long Jacket."
Cheap Trick releases "Special One," its first new set in six years, on Tuesday (7/22). A limited-edition DVD that is included with the CD features videos for "Say Goodbye," "Woke Up with a Monster," "Hard to Tell," and "Hot Love," as well as a recording of the previously unreleased 1976 track "He's a Whore."
The Detroit Cobras, one of several bands that have been getting attention as the Detroit music scene heats up, generally play garage-rock versions of cover songs. Among the acts they cover on their 2001 album were Ike Turner, Ronnie Mack and Otis Redding.
The Louvin Brothers, noted for their great harmonies, are considered one of the most influential country acts of the '40s and ‘50s. The duo was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Ira Louvin died in a 1965 car accident, and Charlie Louvin has continued to record and perform.
The Hackensaw Boys are a high-energy, seven-piece Virginia bluegrass group that appeared on the first Unlimited Sunshine Tour.
Last year's jaunt also featured Kinky, Modest Mouse, De La Soul and The Flaming Lips. The outing focused on larger, outdoor venues, but attendance was disappointing in some markets.
