Todd Rundgren tours as bootlegs and reissues continue to roll out
As a new series of official bootlegs and reissues makes its way into stores, Todd Rundgren has lined up another round of tour dates.
The next Rundgren-related release, due on July 31, is the DVD "Nazztopia--A Live Performance After All These Years." The recording captures a 2002 New York reunion concert that featured many of Rundgren's former band members; performers included Moogy Klingman's Freak Parade (with original Utopia drummer Kevin Ellman) and Stewkey (lead singer of the Nazz). Rundgren himself wasn't present.
Sanctuary Records released "Nearly Human Tour Japan '90," the third album in its Rundgren series, on April 1. Rundgren is working closely with the label, sorting though decades of his personal recording collection, and plans to release "a number of additional albums and DVDs throughout 2003," according to Sanctuary.
The first Sanctuary release, "Live at the Forum '94," was recorded in London and includes "Bang the Drum All Day," "Love of the Common Man" and selections from his 1994 release "No World Order," which was billed as the first audio-only interactive CD-ROM.
The second is "Open Our Eyes: The Anthology," a 35-track retrospective of Rundgren's first group, the Nazz.
In 1969, Rundgren left the Nazz to pursue a solo career. Among his hit singles are "I Saw the Light," "Hello It's Me" and "Can We Still Be Friends." From there, he formed Utopia in 1974 and ventured into prog rock.
Over the years, Rundgren has produced albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, XTC and others, and has continued to release solo albums. He also contributed his rendition of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" to the recently released disc "Songs from the Material World--A Tribute to George Harrison."
Rundgren has been traveling light for his recent concerts, performing solo with a guitar, piano and an MP3 player.
