Iggy Pop summons original Stooges for new album, gigs

For the first time since the Stooges split more than 30 year ago, punk-rock godfather Iggy Pop has recorded new material with two of his original bandmates in the group--Ron Asheton on guitar and bass, and his brother Scott Asheton on drums.

The four songs that Pop wrote and recorded with the Ashetons--"Little Electric Chair," "Skull Rings," "Loser" and "Dead Rock Star"--appear on a new album titled "Skull Ring," which he plans to release on Sept. 30. The tracks emerged from a January recording session in Miami.

"Skull Ring" also features two songs Pop recorded with Green Day . The album's first single, "Little Know It All," features Sum 41 ; and other cuts feature Pop's backup band The Trolls and female rapper Siren.

Pop and the Ashetons reconvened for a Stooges set at Southern California's annual Coachella festival in April, and have been playing U.S. and European festivals in recent months.

The Stooges are scheduled to perform at New York's Jones Beach Theatre on Aug. 9, and the group makes a Detroit-area homecoming on Aug. 14 at the DTE Energy Music Theatre. Sonic Youth appears on both bills.

The last Stooges album, "Fun House," was released 33 years ago. At the time, the band featured Ron Asheton on guitar and original bassist Dave Alexander, who died in 1975.
