Bonnaroo NE festival canceled due to Field Day fallout

Organizers of the Bonnaroo NE music festival have called off the event, citing concerns over the last-minute cancellation of Field Day, which was set to take place earlier this month at the same Long Island venue.

Bonnaroo NE was slated for Aug. 8-10 at Riverhead, N.Y.'s Enterprise Park. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the Dead, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, and the Dead were among the acts who were scheduled to appear.

"During the past few weeks, we have closely watched the developments surrounding the organizational and permitting process for another festival--Field Day--scheduled for the same site on the weekend of June 7 and 8," Bonnaroo officials said in a statement. "This process culminated with the denial of Field Day's permits and the cancellation of the festival at this site only two days before it was scheduled to open."

Organizers said that after looking at the "atmosphere" created in the wake of Field Day's problems, they decided that it wasn't possible to go forward with the event.

"We have determined that it would be irresponsible to the artists, to the festival goers, to citizens in the community, and to ourselves to move ahead with our plans given the circumstances that now exist," the statement said.

Organizers said that all Bonnaroo NE ticket holders will automatically be issued a full refund. "It may take a few days for your refund to be fully processed by your credit card company or bank and appear on your statement."

The decision about the Bonnaroo NE event will not impact the sold-out Bonnaroo Music Festival, which is set to take place in Manchester, Tenn., this weekend. The Dead , Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Widespread Panic, the Allman Brothers Band, James Brown, Emmylou Harris, and many others are on the bill for that sold-out event.

Earlier this month, the Riverhead town board, citing security concerns, denied promoters a mass-gathering permit for Field Day. Riverhead police said they could not handle the expected crowd of 50,000 without outside help, and New York State Police reportedly said they did not have enough lead time to prepare for the event.

To save the event, Field Day organizers condensed the schedule from two days to one and moved it to New Jersey's Giants Stadium.
