Coroner Says Overdose Killed Blues Traveler Bassist

Toxicology reports show that a combination of heroin, cocaine and Valium killed Blues Traveler bassist Bobby Sheehan, according to Orleans Parish Coroner Frank Minyard. Sheehan was found dead two months ago in his New Orleans home.

On Aug. 20, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Sheehan went to bed at about 4:30 a.m. Before he went to bed, he recorded a song in his home studio with New Orleans-based drummer Carlo Nuccio . Friends who were spending the night found Sheehan dead when they checked on him several hours later.

Prior to his death, Sheehan had begun work on his first solo album, and he planned to return to the studio with Blues Traveler in the fall to begin pre-production on the band's sixth studio recording. Sheehan also had recently completed a brief tour with guitarist John Mooney.

The members of Blues Traveler recently announced that they will continue as a band, despite the death of founding member Sheehan, and that they plan to reconvene next year to begin work on the new album. However, the band has called off a New Year's Eve appearance in Reno, which was the only show remaining on the band's 1999 itinerary.
