Barry White suffers stroke, daughter optimistic for recovery
Baritone-voiced soul singer Barry White , who is awaiting a kidney transplant, recently suffered a stroke that affected his speech and the right side of his body, his daughter said at a Friday (5/19) press conference in Los Angeles.
"My dad had surgery May 1 to place a catheter in his arm," she said, according to City News Service. "He had a stroke ... that affected his speech and the right side of his body, but he is in great spirits."
Def Jam, White's label, revealed in September that the 58-year-old artist was undergoing dialysis for kidney failure. He has had health problems since he was hospitalized for high blood pressure in 1999. The native of Galveston, Texas, reportedly needs to be stabilized before he can undergo a kidney transplant.
White's solo career dates back 30 years, and his hits included "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" and "You're the First, the Last, My Everything." His 2000 album "Staying Power" picked up two GRAMMY® awards.
At Friday's press conference, Saheara White told reporters that her 58-year-old father "had a minor setback, but have no fear, he'll be fine. He will definitely be performing again."
